SHE BROKE MY HEART

My heart bleeds for her, it aches for her
She is three or four, beautiful, innocent
I watch from the desperation of my pockets
Right this minute I have nothing to offer her
Why don't I have anything for her?
Watching her breaks my weak heart

She looks so frail yet so oblivious
Her mother moves her around to find a dry place
It is raining, usually I love the rain but not tonight
Her mother is cold, her mother is hurting, her mother is desperate
Her mother could use my help, but I have nothing in my palms
Finally she settles for a drier place

It is cold, too cold, Nairobi rain needs to go
She has on a light dirty jacket, it stinks but that's just details
I don't know if she had any food for day
I don't even have any cash on me to buy her anything
Her mother hugs her tight enough to keep her warm
I can tell they got home, this is their home

My heart breaks for the dangers they stand to face
The streets are not meant for any women
Not for any children, not to anyone
The darkness threatens her innocence
Her mother is at the mercy of  midnight strangers
Am still standing there, helpless, why am I so helpless??

I move closer to understand her agony
She is open to me, her daughter beautifully smiles at me
She tells me her story, one of loss, courage and my heart breaks further
Her husband was abusive for years, everyone told her go
She left, finally, nobody told her where to go to
She is afraid she has to go back to him,
He warned her she would be back
He warned her he was all she had
How do I tell her to stay here? Is the darkness outside less scary?
Am still standing there, helpless, why am I so helpless??
